What About the Age of Aquarius?

The Age of Aquarius is frequently discussed as though humanity has crossed a clearly defined astrological boundary. The reality is much less certain.

Astrological ages are associated with the precession of the equinoxes, a slow astronomical movement that takes roughly 26,000 years to complete. Dividing that cycle into twelve equal sections produces ages of roughly 2,160 years each.

The difficulty is determining exactly where one age ends and another begins.

There is no universally accepted starting date for the Age of Aquarius. Different astrologers and traditions use different boundaries, which can produce dates separated by centuries.

For that reason, saying that we are unquestionably living in the Age of Aquarius goes further than the evidence allows.

What is interesting is the symbolism behind the discussion. Aquarius has long been associated astrologically with collective structures, knowledge, innovation, disruption, and questions concerning the relationship between the individual and society.

Whether we have officially entered an Aquarian Age is still open to debate. Because there is no universally accepted boundary between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius, astrologers continue to debate whether the Aquarian Age has begun or remains ahead of us.
